Catamaran Rear Steps take shape
One
of the things that stood out about a Catamaran was the easy access (excuse
the pun). Both sides had a set of stairs that raised you on top of the
world before you had even unlocked the doors.
We had chosen to add a couple of things here, which did add to the building
time, however does pay dividends.
After carefully cutting into the hull, the initial rear
step construction started to take shape. The plans called for two steps.
Design/construction was planned at two days per side and soon it was time
for a trial before gluing. Keegan ran up and down a few times and it was
obvious at this stage that the step height for our boat anyway, had to
be smaller.
The only way to do this was to insert third step that meant
re cutting the hull and another two days of work. To provide a psychological
appearance of size on our lower step platform, all steps were designed
narrower in width on the inside than the outside giving this neat slight
swirl effect.
We also chose to put 5mm drop from the rear of each step to the front as
well as from outside to inside. This was to provide water runoff at all
times. The last thing we wanted was for someone to take a slide because
of standing water that we could reduce.
