The Cabin Sides

image1

The cabin sides are an extension of the hulls and form the foundation for the upper bridgedeck.

The hard work is now really starting to take shape. The yachts cabin sides were an item we had delayed and we have no idea why as they form a pivotal foundation for the gradual walkway fall from ‘cockpit area’ to the bow. Additionally the yachts Turret is reliant on its construction.

The side cabin windows are cut from these sides that (if you follow the plans) were reasonably easy. Our challenges arose when after cutting the window holes, we decided to add the internal cupboard against one of the pre-cut cabin window holes.

Re-enforced sections are also cut and glued at this stage to be utilised later for bolting the stays too that assist in holding the mast. Its here that the use of the correct length Stainless Steel Screws was needed, any perforations on the outer skin had to be attended too so as to prevent any later challenges of expansion and cracking. We know of many who remove their stainless screws once dry, there are many arguments for and against.

image5This construction includes the rear deck steps that allow access the top deck. There was a marked change in appearance once this was completed. The panels seemed easy to cut and install however turned out a little trickier than first thought. There are two ways that the cabins side window cutouts can be constructed and of course, we chose the harder of the two.

At the end of the day, the extra work doing the latter worked out to about 20 hours. On top of this was the additional bogging sanding that was required in all the tight curves, very testing.

By far the most trickiest component to cut here was in the rear section and involved a vertical ‘step panel’ for both sides. The angles/drop were a challenge that took a few hours to design.
